Optometry is a paramedical field which deals with eyes, its structures, vision, visual system and vision information processing in human beings. Optometrists are trained to check any defect in vision, its treatment like prescribing and dispensing spectacles and contact lenses to improve vision.
This is a dynamic and challenging career, which allows one to help people, achieve personal growth, community respect, job flexibility and financial success and offers virtually unlimited opportunities. Being a regulated profession, an optometrist’s scope of practice may differ depending on the location.
The program is envisaged to develop a multipurpose ophthalmic manpower at paramedical level. The training will enable a student to become a competent person in providing services as an Optician, Optometrist, Refractionist and Ophthalmic Assistant to the community in urban, semi-urban and rural settings in private, semi-Governmental and Governmental sectors.
Optometry is a 4 year undergraduate program with one year internship, which was established under the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences in 2013 at SGT University. In future we are planning to start Master in Optometry program too. The vision and mission of the program is to deliver quality and efficient eye care to the general public.
The students are provided with well-equipped instruments and practical environment so that they can have better knowledge regarding the instrument which they have studied in theory classes. In practical/clinics they are taught how to cope with the patient and counsel them and provide them best eye care bringing smile on their faces.
Time to time students of optometry are taken to different Industries related with the field of optometry, Hospitals and renowned Eye Care Centers to make them familiar with practical requirements of the industry. Also guest lectures by well-known professionals are arranged for the benefit of the students so that they can gain more knowledge regarding the subject matter. Furthermore seminars and workshops are organized as well as eye camps and school screening programs are taken up so that students get exposure to different kinds of working environments.
The presence of well qualified and motivated team of faculty members is an added boon to the department.
