Department of Nutrition & Dietetics

Nutrition is a basic human need and a prerequisite to a healthy life. A proper diet is essential from the very early stages of life for proper growth, development, and to remain active. Dietetics is the science that signifies how food and nutrition affect human health. The field of dietetics has a strong emphasis on public health and a commitment to educating all about the importance of making proper dietary choices. This is an exciting time to study nutrition and dietetics. Concerns about the safety of the food supply have increased and there is a major federal initiative to improve food safety.

Nutrition and dietetics studies bridge the connection between food, medicine, and chemistry, focusing on the good and bad effects of alimentation on the human body.

The Department of Nutrition & Dietetics was established under the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, SGT University in the year 2014. The vision and mission of the department are to create world-class committed Public health, Dietetics, Nutrition, and Food Science professionals who can contribute meaningfully to the social, economic, and health development of the country. Towards this mission, our goals are to persistently update and enrich our academic programme, expand our network with other institutions, establish national and international collaborations and explore all avenues for an extension.

The Department offers Graduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral programs in Nutrition & Dietetics. The course is planned in such a way that students not only get theoretical knowledge through classroom teaching but also focuses on practical training and research work. Different industrial, hospital, community visits, and events are organized by the department to impart in-depth knowledge to the students.

Regular summer and winter training/ internship programs are organized in various hospitals and health care centers to provide specialized professional training so that students can seek jobs as Nutritionists, (including Public Health Nutritionists); Professionals in the food industry, Dietitians, Food Service Managers, Fitness and Weight Management Industry Independent practice, Freelance Clinical Writing and Food Product Development staff in professional institutions and government and voluntary organizations.

The Department has fully equipped laboratories for graduate and postgraduate students. Field training in assessment of dietary, nutrient intakes, biochemical and nutritional status assessment forms an important component of the program at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Major researches pursued in the Department are in the areas of New Food Formulations and Community Research.
