Recent Advances in Computed Tomography (CT-Scan)

Background CT (Computed Tomography) or CAT (Computerized Axial Tomography) derives its meaning from the Greek words ‘tomo’ means “slices” or ‘section’ means “describing”.

Two independent researchers invented CT imaging, Sir Godfrey Hounsfield, who worked with General Electronics and designed the first prototype of the CT scanner known as the EMI scanner and a Physicist, Dr Allan Cormack, who explained the formula for the mathematical reconstruction of images).

The two researchers developed the first CT scanners solely used for brain imaging between 1974 & 1976. Images are given below showing the advancements in the CT.

Introduction – CT scan is an X-Ray procedure that combines the use of X-Ray with the aid of a computer to generate cross-sectional views/Images and if needed, 3d images of the internal organs and structures of the body.

Some of the significant advancements: – fan-beam CT scan, Electron beam CT scan, Helical or Spiral CT scan, Dual-source or multi-slice CT scan. To familiarise everyone with the recent advancements of CT scan & their generations. The different characteristics of CT scan technology and advancements and new generations.
