Medical Laboratory Technology also called Clinical laboratory science is an allied health profession which is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease through the use of clinical laboratory tests. These tests help doctors to detect, diagnose and treat diseases. A Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) do these tests by analyzing body fluids, tissues, blood typing, microorganism screening, chemical analyses, cell counts of human body etc. They play an important role in collecting the information’s needed, sampling, testing, reporting and documentation of these investigations. They determine the presence, extent or absence of disease and provide data needed to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.
Medical technologists have more training and job responsibilities. They perform complex tests such as microscopic examinations of tissues, blood and other body fluids to detect evidence of disease and detect the presence of bacteria, fungi, parasites etc and chemical tests to determine blood cholesterol levels etc. They also match blood samples for transfusions and test drug levels in blood to determine how patients are responding to medications. They are often responsible for making sure that testing is done accurately. In some labs, technologists conduct research under the supervision of medical researchers.
Medical technicians do routine laboratory testing manually according to instructions. They work under Technologists or supervisors. Technicians may prepare specimens and operate machines that automatically analyze samples. In addition to running tests, technicians set up, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment, such as centrifuges, microscopes etc. They also prepare standard solutions for use in the lab. This involves measuring and mixing the correct amount of various chemicals.
Some of the courses offered in Lab Technology are Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT), Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT). BMLT course for Medical Lab Technologists is structured to train students in the clinical Laboratory analysis of blood, urine, feces, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, ascetic fluid etc to aid the doctors in arriving at a correct diagnosis and treatment of the disease. There are also Diploma / Certificate courses for lab technicians / assistants

Duration of Study:
2 year’s program (full-time experiential rotations in various aspects of professional practice in the field)
10+2 pass from Board of School Education Haryana or an examination recognized as equivalent thereto by SGT University.
- The candidate can work in both Govt. and Private hospital as Technician in Blood Banks, Multi-speciality Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Diagnostic Labs and Pharmaceuticals and Public Health Laboratories.
- The candidates can get opportunities to work in the quality control departments also.
- The candidate can go for higher studies such as B.Sc. and M.Sc. etc.
Core Department: Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Pathology.
Teaching strategies: – Five major areas of the laboratory will be covered which is: Blood banking, Clinical Chemistry (chemical analysis of body fluids), Hematology (blood related), Immunology (study of immune system) and Microbiology (study of bacteria and other disease organisms).
The interdisciplinary curriculum is based both on clinical (practical) and research/theoretical model for practice.
The major focus is on clearing the principle and providing hands on training. Students are prepared to participate in a multi-disciplinary approach to planning, implementing, managing, and evaluating programs and services for worker health and safety.
In 1st Year Total Teaching Hours – 1080. Out of which Total Theory Hours – 590, Practical Hours- 150 and Lab Posting 340.
In 2nd Year Total Teaching hours – 1080. Out of which Total Theory Hours – 280, Practical Hours- 110 and Lab Posting 240, besides 450hrs for Seminar/Group Discussion/Tutorials/Field visits.

Students will be given assignment/project for summer/winter vacation at suitable hospital/diagnostic lab and they will be asked to present project/work report to be evaluated for their internal assessment. The students will be given due support by the faculty in this regard.
Following Teaching Guideline is followed for the curriculum of DMLT
The theory training will be primarily from cognitive domain while practical training will be from cognitive, psychomotor and affective domain.

Lab Posting/ Hospital Training
- Students shall be deputed to various labs within Hospital wherein they shall undergo Practical training of, collection, handling patients and processing of clinical samples.
- Process of performing various tests in different labs
- Each student is required to maintain a logbook of the various posting. Student’s performance shall be evaluated on continuous basis by the faculty posted in various sections. The faculty shall submit the assessment records of each student posted in his/her section on monthly basis to the HOD.
