Optometry means a health care profession that is autonomous and concerned especially with examining the eye ailments and defects of refraction, with prescribing correctional lenses either in the form of spectacles, contact lenses, or even refractive surgeries, visual rehabilitation care for the visually impaired, with diagnosing disease of the eye and treating such disease or referring them for treatment. As primary eye care practitioners, optometrist have a vital role in detecting potentially serious eye disease as well as general health conditions, which means optometrist can also help to alleviate the burden of other causes of blindness through diagnosis, referral, and in some co-management. Optometry can and should play a leading role in eye care provision at the primary level, and can also assist at secondary and tertiary levels where possible working with other eye care providers towards the unifying goal of combating blindness.
EDUCATION IN OPTOMETRY
When developing any education program it is necessary that program planning should be outcome-based meeting local and national manpower requirements personal satisfaction and career potential for the professional with supporting pathway in the development of the profession.
The focus of the profession is to create qualified and skilled manpower in the filled of optometry through the following levels of education-
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
As per the UGC guidelines, it is recommended that the student entering the optometry program should have completed the recognized secondary school studies as the qualification stipulated for B.Optometry is 10+2 with science (Biology / Mathematics) or equivalent from a recognized university or board which will provide the foundation for and prepare them for higher education studies.
Candidates who complete a diploma in Ophthalmic techniques/ diploma in Optometry ( after completion of 10+2 with science) can also join the undergraduate course. They would be eligible to join in 2nd year of Optometry Course. The total education therefore would be (2-year diploma +3 year of undergraduate studies). The 3rd year program ( lateral entry) would be an internship.
COURSE DURATION
It is recommended that any program developed from this curriculum should have a minimum of the following duration to qualify as a professional course in optometry-
- 4-year program ( including 1 year of clinical training/internship) – Bachelor’s degree level
- 2-year program – Master’s degree level
